The history of the Egelo Magic brand with more than half a century of magic. From Egil “Egelo” Berg, to Kurt Bai and Curty, three generations dedicated to the passion for the art of magic.
Egil “Egelo” Berg was the son of Customs Revisor Nacor Koris Berg (1887-1958) and Emma Elida (1896-1960), and was married to Klara.
Egelo worked in a radio and television business before he began full-time magic. In the early 1960’s he started a shop, Egelo’s Crazy Shop, which sold magic tricks and other fun stuff, in an old dairy shop in Idunsgata 2 in Oslo. Later, it was moved to Tordenskjolds gate 12, in the heart of Oslo city center.
Egelo, happily with his wife Klara, performed throughout the country and abroad, including the United States, Spain and the Soviet Union. He traveled often with Jens Book-Jenssen. He was part to a number of magic congresses and also built a large collection of video recording by magicians, magic shows and educational videos. When he celebrated his 50th and 60th anniversary, he arranged a big magic hit on Chat Noir. He was also judge in a series of national and international magic competitions.
Egelo received the King’s Merit Award in 1999. He also received other foreign awards, including the 1995 Award of Merit from the Academy of the Magical Arts in the United States.
Egelo operated the business until 1999 when he sold it to Kurt Bai.
Kurt Bai, founder of the famous Bailine, was the first to write a “Magic School” in Norway, and he started his first mail order business with only 14 years old. While still in his young days, Kurt sold the copyrights of his magic school to Egelo.
When Egelo retired and sold the business, Kurt bought back all the copyrights of the magic school and all the books and booklets edited by Egelo during all these over 3 decades.
Kurt have since kept the brand and this material alive, until 2012 when he sold all together to Curty.
Curty has revived the magic shop as an online business from 2012 until 2015, when showbusiness took over, and time to keep a full shop and catalogue, with over 400 DVD titles and hundreds of props up to date, was just too little.
The Magic School kept running as usual in the last 2 years, but from the beginning of 2018, the company has being reformulated. The Egelo’s Magic School is now being digitized and the main goal is to produce our own original props and learning material, and not a shop/dealer.
We’re now located in a small farm, with a workshop and showroom, 1 hour south from Oslo, in Re kommune. For more information check our contact page.
